Time for the next edition of Metal Anarchy’s “new music showcase,” the feature where I introduce you to bands that readers of this site may find interesting. This time I have an exclusive Q&A with Tension Rising.
METAL ANARCHY: Tell me a little about your band:
TENSION RISING: NICK VAN PAGE: We are Tension Rising. We’re a hard rock/alt-metal four-piece band. Chris [Garrigan] and I met in college back in 2008. We started up a cover band, played a few local gigs for about a year, and we decided to start writing our own material. I knew Alex [Repetti] from high school, and around 2015, we needed a new bass player. He professed strong interest in joining, and I knew he would add a new dimension to what we were trying to accomplish.
METAL ANARCHY: Who are your main influences?
TENSION RISING: NICK VAN PAGE: From a guitar player standpoint, I would say Jimmy Page, Eddie Van Halen, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Nuno Bettencourt, and Steve Lukather
ALEX REPETTI: Led Zeppelin is the band that made me want to become a musician. Dream Theater is the band that most influenced my musical trajectory. I also love Neal Morse, Symphony X, Haken, and The Beatles.
METAL ANARCHY: What is your latest release and why should readers of this site check it out?
TENSION RISING: ALEX REPETTI: We just put out a new single/lyric video for Doomsayer
CHRIS GARRIGAN: Doomsayer is a song essentially about the end of days. A bleak viewpoint of the world around us from one man who stands in the midst of absolute chaos.
As he observes what transpires around him, he confronts a “fortune teller” of sorts.
In history we know these individuals as “soothsayers”. These individuals have been told to us to foresee the future and what lies ahead for us all.
This particular “soothsayer” is categorically what we sought out to portray as a “Doomsayer”, a fortuneteller of inevitable doom; the speaker of demise as it were.
Our protagonist pleads with the doomsayer to tell him what lies in store for humanity. What shall happen to the human race during this time of death, decay, and turmoil?
Our Doomsayer clearly speaks to him, “I see no hope for you now”.
Fate has extended out its hand and pulled the rug out from under our very feet.
**We wanted this song to just be a story with very graphic imagery. At the time we were toying with other song ideas with similar concepts for dark song writing and we noticed all the madness around us. For those who believe in such things, you would be pressed to think that these were “end times”. That sparked the idea of creating this hellish world of the “Doomsayer”.
ALEX REPETTI: Our upcoming album PENUMBRA is coming out on September 7, 2020. We’re really excited about it! It’s the first Tension Rising album that I’ve been a part of. Aside from being very involved in the writing, and of course playing bass, I also did a lot of backing vocals on this album, which is something I haven’t done much of in the past for any of my other musical endeavors. I’m also proud to say that I was the recording and mixing engineer for this album as well!
METAL ANARCHY: What can people expect when they go to your live shows?
TENSION RISING: ALEX REPETTI: The band has been on hiatus since 2015, and I haven’t played any shows with Tension Rising. I’ve seen some of them though, from before I was in the band, and I can say that there is a great energy coming off of the stage. We’re really excited to start gigging again once things start getting back to “normal” around here.
METAL ANARCHY: Where do you see your band heading in 5 years?
TENSION RISING: ALEX REPETTI: The hope for me, is to have put out at least a few more albums by then, and have done a fair deal of touring and festivals. We have a lot of great music to come!
