Metal Anarchy’s New Music Showcase: Exclusive Q&A With Gnostic Gorilla

Time for the next edition of Metal Anarchy’s “new music showcase,” the feature where I introduce you to bands that readers of this site may find interesting. This time I have an exclusive Q&A with Gnostic Gorilla.

METAL ANARCHY: Tell me a little about your band:

GNOSTIC GORILLA: Gnostic Gorilla, headed by frontman Dean Mason is an ‘experiment’ in Industrial/Dark Wave/Goth/Dark Electronic Music. Originally, the ‘project’ name was “The Lonely Ghost Project” but that was changed in 2015 with the first album release, titled “St. Basil’s Asylum”. (Later re-released by Cleopatra Records, October 2018) Gnostic Gorilla is an acquired tasteless. Hahahahahaha. But seriously, some of it is dark, some of it is weird, some of it borders on disturbing and some of it will make you shit your panties…hahahahaha.

METAL ANARCHY: Who are your main influences?

GNOSTIC GORILLA: There are bands/artists that are influential and some that have inspired me. When I was a teenager, Gary Numan was a major inspiration to me. As well, Japan and Bauhaus and in a huge way, and still to this day, The Doors are a huge inspiration to me! I need to add Nash the Slash is a real inspiration as an indie artist. The bands that are influential in the way I approach music myself are Ministry, Type O Negative, Skinny Puppy, Rammstein, Korn and many industrial/Darkwave/ NuMetal bands/artists.

METAL ANARCHY: What is your latest release and why should readers of this site check it out?

GNOSTIC GORILLA:Freak’s Mind” was released in February of this year. It’s a total accident in the sense that I had no plans on recording new music. It’s quite bizarre and certainly more industrial/Dark Wave. I’m very proud of this album. That said, it’s important to point out that “St. Basil’s Asylum” was released by Cleopatra Records in October of 2018 and is in my opinion a Gothic classic waiting to be discovered.

METAL ANARCHY: What can people expect when they go to your live shows?

GNOSTIC GORILLA: Unfortunately, at this time, Gnostic Gorilla is not touring. HOWEVER, in a few days, (weeks?) I will be sort of on stage in Australia with CRIX IIX as they perform two songs that I have written lyrics and recorded vocals for. They will have my vocal track played while they play live and will feature clips of my dark ugly puss on screens! hahahahahahaha.

METAL ANARCHY: Where do you see your band heading in 5 years?

GNOSTIC GORILLA: Dang baby, I have no clue. I’m not trying to be a snot, but I just really don’t know. I am not delusional enough to assume that I will be some big name. It’s difficult to break through (to the other side? Hahahahaha) in this industry today as you know. But I will hopefully continue to experiment with recording. AND…I’d like to take the time to announce that I will be spearheading a new project, more of the Black Metal Ambient ‘style’ (not the philosophy) called “Luna Melancholia” with Marcel Lecker of Battle Moose and Pat Masters who was the vocalist of the death metal band, “Summertime Daisies”. This will be amazing. Absolutely.
