Time for the next edition of Metal Anarchy’s “new music showcase,” the feature where I introduce you to up and coming bands that readers of this site may find interesting. This time I have an exclusive Q&A with The King Of Mars.
METAL ANARCHY: Tell me a little about your band:
THE KING OF MARS: The King of Mars is a rock/funk/indie band from Chicago, IL. We currently have 9 band members in our collective including a horn section and auxiliary percussion. We’ve gone through a lot of lineup changes in the past, but this band has technically been playing since 2015.
METAL ANARCHY: Who are your main influences?
THE KING OF MARS: The King of Mars sounds like Radiohead had a sonic baby with Red Hot Chili Peppers and added a horn section. But personally, some of my (John Bruner) biggest musical influences when writing the music for this band have been Stevie Wonder for his vocal chops and horn arrangements and Father John Misty for his lyricism and songwriting skills.
METAL ANARCHY: What is your latest release and why should readers of this site check it out?
THE KING OF MARS: Our second release, Bleach and Aspirin, just came out in October of 2018. It’s on all streaming sites including Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube. We put in a ton of work and time into this album and even recorded, mixed and mastered it ourselves so it’s become very personal to all of us. We’re immensely proud of this collection of music and we’d be honored if you’d give it a listen!
METAL ANARCHY: What can people expect when they go to your live shows?
THE KING OF MARS: All the musicians in this band have a music degree or are in the process of getting a degree, so we pride ourselves on providing top notch musicianship. At live shows you can expect some high energy onstage and sometimes funny/sometimes awkward stage banter. We also love to throw in some fun covers to keep the audience on their toes. We’ve covered anything from Stevie Wonder to Outkast so you’ll have to come to a show and see for yourself.
METAL ANARCHY: Where do you see your band in 5 years?
THE KING OF MARS: Our dream is to make a full time career out of this band and that’s what we plan on doing. We’re in the process of looking for a booking agency to help us book some out of state shows and get involved in some local festivals. We’ll also be recording a lot more music and release a full album in the next few years along with some live footage and music videos.
We’ve worked our asses off to get to this point and we’d love it if you’d follow our social media page on Facebook and Instagram to keep up to date with everything we’re up to.
