Metal Anarchy’s New Music Showcase: Exclusive Q&A With 21 Taras

Time for the next edition of Metal Anarchy’s “new music showcase,” the feature where I introduce you to up and coming bands that readers of this site may find interesting. This time I have an exclusive Q&A with 21 Taras.

METAL ANARCHY: Who are your main influences?

21 TARAS: As a band The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Queen, The Doors and The Beach Boys are some of our biggest influences. As individuals it extends even farther. From Randy Rhoads to Earthless for James (lead guitar), to Tame Impala and The Strokes for Austin (rhythm guitar). Our drummer pulls a lot of influences from bands like Deep Purple and Humble Pie. Our bassist Jimmy pulls from Radiohead and The Smashing Pumpkins. I (Julian – vocals/keys) have really been listening to a lot of early jazz in the forms of Ella Fitzgerald and Thelonious Monk. I have also really enjoyed this great 60s bossa nova artist Astrud Gilberto.

METAL ANARCHY: What can you say about your latest release and why should readers of this site check it out?

21 TARAS: I think your readers would really appreciate and dig what we are doing. With our newest album “Change” we go all over the place in terms of sound. Heavily influenced by mid 60s to 70s rock, it also contains some early 50s jazz influences as well as some spanish influence. We try to take the listener on a journey of sorts when they listen to our music. There are lots of small details so bust out your headphones!

METAL ANARCHY: What can people expect when they go to your live shows?

21 TARAS: We are always trying very hard to improve our live shows. From set to set, we evaluate everything to see what we can add to the shows. The album contains so many layers and with there being only 5 of us on stage it makes it a fun challenge to try and recreate it live. You get a very real and genuine performance from us and while we have a guideline in place the shows are very dependant on crowd response. The more fuel we get really influences our performances and creates an atmosphere that is unmatched.

METAL ANARCHY: Where do you see your band in 5 years?

21 TARAS: I’m not sure. It is very hard to say, I don’t even know what this next year holds. All I know is that we are going to continue to grow as musicians and performers and we already have a lot of cool new songs in the works that we can’t wait to share with everyone. Stay tuned to for updates!
