Neal Schon has expressed a desire to work with his former Journey bandmate Steve Perry once again. However, if a collaboration were to happen, he doesn’t think it would be Journey related.
Schon said the following about Perry:
“‘I’ve been hearing that he’s been showing up in the same coffee joint that I go to all the time. Hopefully I’ll run into him soon. We had a great meeting when we met for the Hall of Fame. I realized there was still a very deep connection there. He’s had nothing but very kind words to say about myself. I’ve done the same for him. The mutual respect is there. One step at a time. I’d just like to get to know him again and see where he’s at. But I can surely tell you that I would love to just have him come and just mess around one day at Narada’s studio with the three of us, because I think we would turn out something that he would really dig.’”
He also told the Detroit Free Press the following about a potential collaboration:
“… I’d love to do an R&B record with Steve. I don’t think he’d ever want to do a Journey record again. It’s just too hard. [The notes are] way, way up there, and last time I heard him sing, his voice was a lot lower. But it was still very soulful. You can sing R&B and soul music and not need five octaves in your voice. [with Journey], he set the bar so high for himself and for anyone else.”
On another note, Schon has been dedicating “Lights” to Perry during Journey’s recent shows with Def Leppard. You can see footage of that below.
Furthermore, the guitarist is planning to release a solo album in 2019, while Perry is expected to release an album in October.
