Time for the next edition of Metal Anarchy’s “new music showcase,” the feature where I introduce you to up and coming bands that readers of this site may find interesting. This time I have an exclusive Q&A with Swirl.
METAL ANARCHY: Tell me a little about your band:
SWIRL: It all started in Anchorage Alaska of all places with Duane “DT” Jones on guitar and my brother Brian “Bam Bam” Jones on drums. We both relocated to the Pacific Northwest before Brian continued south to California where I later joined him after the passing of our father. Claude Schnell formerly with DIO introduced me to singer Alfred Ramirez and bassist Shane Carlson. It`s now going on 10 years since Swirl left the studio with the two tracks produced by Cinderella drummer Fred Coury. We have toured the United States had music licensed into award winning films and now our music is charting in multiple countries. It`s very exciting time for all involved in Swirl.
METAL ANARCHY: Who are your main influences?
SWIRL: The four of us approach music from very different places to create the Swirl sound. DT and Brian started their rock n roll journey together as fans of KISS, but then quickly went in separate musical directions with Brian taking an interest in Rush and jazz drummers, while DT became a fan of 80s era guitarists including Jake E. Lee and Warren DeMartini. Alfred regularly lists his inspiration from David Bowie and Billy Idol while Shane being the most “metal” of the group cites Metallica and Korn among his biggest influences.
METAL ANARCHY: What is your latest release and why should readers of this site check it out?
SWIRL: Our new single is called “The Lift” and it promises to do just that. Lift your spirits and improve your mood. Since its release in January 2018 “The Lift” has remained at the #1 position on Midwest USA radio and reached as high as #4 on Banks Radio Australia. Stations the world over are adding “The Lift” to their rotation.
“What “The Lift” means to me is that we all need help sometimes, be it an emotional lift or a physical lift. We shouldn’t be afraid to ask for help when we need it. We also shouldn’t be afraid to offer to help when were able to. We are all on this planet together and we are all connected, so let’s help one another. My personal Lift was given to me by “The Minor Goddess” who lifted me out of a depressed and stressed out anxious time in my life. Thank you MG! “Your words will always stay with me”- Swirl singer Alfred Ramirez.
METAL ANARCHY: What can people expect when they go to your live shows?
SWIRL: A Swirl show is just that…a show. There are always plenty of things happening on stage to catch your eye along with the musicianship. We have adopted the musicians in the studio and entertainers on the stage motto when it comes to a live Swirl show. No one is staring at the tops of their shoes all night for sure. The audience reaction to the energy and musicianship makes for a fantastic experience night in and night out.
METAL ANARCHY: Where do you see your band heading in 5 years?
SWIRL: We want Swirl to be a household name as easily recognized as any of the biggest bands in the hard rock genre. We have laid the foundation for this and continue to tour with bands who have had incredible success with their careers. Since the release of our ‘SWIRL’ EP, we have been the support act on several North American tours for many established rock artists including RATT, Extreme, Cinderella, Slaughter, LA Guns, Souls of We, Red Dragon Cartel, Skid Row and more, and have headlined shows in Southern California. Within 5 years we want Swirl to be a full time international headlining band.
