Interview: Lightworker’s Joe Calderon Talks New Album “How The Beautiful Decay”

I was recently given the opportunity to interview Lightworker vocalist Joe Calderon about the band’s new album “How The Beautiful Decay” (out April 19). You can read that chat below.

METAL ANARCHY: What would you like to tell readers of this site about your new album “How The Beautiful Decay”?

CALDERON: It’s a melodic metalcore sandwich with plenty of nutritious riffs, breakdowns, and solos for everyone. It also includes a side of guest vocals from Kyle of Fallujah and Steve of Wolves at the Gate.

METAL ANARCHY: What are some of the themes that you are exploring on the effort?

CALDERON: Struggling through the darkest corners of the human mind and resisting those kinds of thoughts. Saying goodbye to loved ones both romantic and family. Various struggles many have gone through such as abuse, trying to be a better person, self doubt, etc.

METAL ANARCHY: What was the writing/recording process like?

CALDERON: It was easily one of the most difficult collection of songs any of us had ever had to write and record. But it’s also been the most rewarding process. We have a multi-chapter mini documentary that will dive a bit more into this soon!

METAL ANARCHY: How does the new music differ from your debut album “Fury By Failure”?

CALDERON: We came into this process wanting to write a more urgent and aggressive sounding record. Hopefully, it comes across that way.

METAL ANARCHY: How have fans been responding to the new songs?

CALDERON: Listeners that have been with us since the first record have been stoked. New listeners have been extremely vocal with their support and encouragement. All in all, it’s been incredible to see the response!

METAL ANARCHY: One track I’ve really been digging is “Burn Scar.” What would you like to say about that track?

CALDERON: The song is about practicing what you preach, especially when people with different ideas and thoughts on life cross your path.

METAL ANARCHY: What are some of your personal favorite songs from “How The Beautiful Decay”?

CALDERON: “Hellscape,” “Burn Scar,” “Unmaker,” “A Bastard’s Shame,” “First Light.”

METAL ANARCHY: You are currently on the road with Eyes Set To Kill and also have a tour booked with Dreamwake. What can fans expect from these shows?

CALDERON: We’ll be playing a ton of new songs and instigating plenty of moshing. Can’t wait to have a good time with everyone!
