Metal Anarchy’s New Music Showcase: Q&A With Solnedgang

Time for the next edition of Metal Anarchy’s “new music showcase,” the feature where I introduce you to artists that readers of this site may find interesting. This time I have a Q&A with Solnedgang.

METAL ANARCHY: Tell me a little about your band:

SOLNEDGANG: Solnedgang is a one-man band, and I (Jon) am from Norway originally but I’ve been based in London for nearly 15 years. I create atmospheric, immersive, but melodic guitar-based instrumental music.

METAL ANARCHY: Who are your main influences?

SOLNEDGANG: There are loads of course, but the main (or at least most obvious) ones would be Mono, Explosions in the Sky, Russian Circles and The Ocean. The Cure have also been a big influence on my guitar playing and sound.

METAL ANARCHY: What is your latest release and why should readers of this site check it out?

SOLNEDGANG: The first single is called ‘Nornir’, and if you like any of the bands mentioned, or similar ones, you might like that as well. It’s quite atmospheric and melodic, and aims to take the listener on a journey. Inspired by Norse mythology, the different parts represent the norns – weavers of the world – and the valkyries as they choose which fallen warriors should go to
Odin’s Valhalla and Freyja’s Folkvangr.

METAL ANARCHY: What can people expect when they go to your live shows?

SOLNEDGANG: I don’t play live, but if and when I do I’d need some animations and videos playing in the background as I think it would be fairly boring to watch me constantly stepping on pedals – classic shoegaze!

METAL ANARCHY: Where do you see your band heading in 5 years?

SOLNEDGANG: Good question! I honestly haven’t thought that far ahead, I’m just focusing on getting the album ready for release later this year. Hopefully in 5 years I will have released a couple more albums, but apart from that I have no idea.
