Time for the next edition of Metal Anarchy’s “new music showcase,” the feature where I introduce you to artists that readers of this site may find interesting. This time I have an exclusive Q&A with Kyle Chatham.

METAL ANARCHY: Tell me a little about your band:
KYLE CHATHAM: At the moment, I’m just performing solo unfortunately. But I’ll be looking to put a band around me as I go along as that’s how the recorded music is presented. I’ve been making music on my own for a long time on recording software and naturally gravitated towards making music that had multiple playable parts as it allowed me to experiment with a range of different sounds and textures.
METAL ANARCHY: Who are your main influences?
KYLE CHATHAM: People like Ben Howard, James Blake, Bon Iver and acts like that are up there. Though I grew up on a lot of 90’s alternative music like Soundgarden and later Deftones that are still a big influence on me. I’m influenced by most of what I hear in some way and I think there are ways of finding all of it in my music somewhere if you really listen.
METAL ANARCHY: What is your latest release and why should readers of this site check it out?
KYLE CHATHAM: My latest single is a track called “Valentine” and your readers should check it out because I imagine it might introduce them to sounds they aren’t often listening to. It is a delicate mix of folk pop and rock music I suppose with quite an introspective and mournful lyric to it. It’s a good representation of where I’ve been at with songwriting recently.
METAL ANARCHY: What can people expect when they go to your live shows?
KYLE CHATHAM: Probably quite an emotionally introverted and focussed performance. A delicacy and an atmosphere is something that I think I get across in most of my live shows. It’s actually been almost 3 years since I last performed though so things could be different now who knows, but in some ways I feel like the music and songs mean more to me now than they ever have. I think having that always helps create a good performance.
METAL ANARCHY: Where do you see yourself heading in 5 years?
KYLE CHATHAM: Having a band would be a good start. I’d like to expand the sonic palette of the music and be playing bigger venues regularly with a decent following by that time. I’d like to have released a lot more music and perhaps have the backing and support to release an album. I’ve always thought of things in terms of full projects, so it’d be nice to be able to do something like that on a big scale.
