Time for the next edition of Metal Anarchy’s “new music showcase,” the feature where I introduce you to bands that readers of this site may find interesting. This time I have an exclusive Q&A with Sir Curse.
METAL ANARCHY: Tell me a little about your band:
SIR CURSE: Imagine Kate Bush running away to join the circus with System of a Down. Now add some shades of American Horror Story, with an unsettling undercurrent à la The Brothers Grimm. You are now some way towards describing Sir Curse, a 6-piece alternative rock band from Leeds.
Formed during our University days by keyboardist Ellen Davis and vocalist Lyndsay Dale, Sir Curse bring you crazed live shows that combine campfire horror storytelling, freak-show theatricality, and full-throttle music.
With the addition of guitarist Bill O’Dwyer, bassist Eric Lock, and trumpeter Joe Martin, we released our debut single ‘Tarot’ in early 2019, building on the success of a small UK tour where we performed with artists such as Hands Off Gretel, Japanese Fighting Fish, Jaye & Foe, and This Winter Machine.
The well-reviewed release of ‘Tarot’ received air time on a number of online and broadcast radio stations, including The Electric Radio Show, Only Rock Radio, and a live performance on Bradford Community Radio. Later in 2019 the band performed at Boomtown Fair, Chapel Allerton Arts Festival, and a number of shows in cities including Leeds, Bradford, Manchester, Hull, and Sheffield. At the end of 2019, ‘Tarot’ was listed among Small Music Scene’s Top 50 Singles of the Year.
2020 sees the release of our newest single ‘Graphite’, as well as Aidan Downes joining on the drums.
METAL ANARCHY: Who are your main influences?
SIR CURSE: As there’s so many of us, our influences can range from Taylor Swift to Beethoven. I’d say our biggest influences are System of a Down and American Horror Story. We are definitely influenced by visual media which could include movies or video games. We’ve also written songs inspired by artwork!
METAL ANARCHY: What is your latest release and why should readers of this site check it out?
SIR CURSE: ‘Graphite’ is a kick ass song and has a sinister hammer horror inspired music video. It was inspired by the Chernobyl HBO TV series and written over the span of a couple writing sessions. It’s up beat, catchy and has some catchy riffs.
METAL ANARCHY: What can people expect when they go to your live shows?
SIR CURSE: The unexpected! We’ve had so many shocked members of the audience tell us they were not expecting us to run out and scream in their face. Confetti cannons, weird marionette moments, poetry in between songs! We’re a heavy band, with influences from loads of different genres. There’s something for everyone. Rest assured you probably won’t have seen another band like us.
METAL ANARCHY: Where do you see your band heading in 5 years?
SIR CURSE: We’d love to tour Asia!! Bill can speak Japanese so he can be our guide. Playing Glastonbury would be a dream come true. I think, really, we just want to keep playing shows and putting out albums. If we can get to the point where we put an album one year and tour the next we would be really happy. We’d also like to make a book of all our artwork and stories. Such a personal way of creating a world with the fans!
