Metal Anarchy’s New Music Showcase: Exclusive Q&A With Scorching Winter

Time for the next edition of Metal Anarchy’s “new music showcase,” the feature where I introduce you to up and coming bands that readers of this site may find interesting. This time I have an exclusive Q&A with Rafael Katigbak of the hard rock/metal band Scorching Winter.

METAL ANARCHY: Tell me a little about your band:

KATIGBAK: Scorching Winter is a female fronted hard rock / metal band formed in Melbourne, Australia. The band was formed in 2012 by myself and our drummer, Nick James. Our sound is a probably like Metallica riffs crossed with Dream Theater orchestration and arrangements crossed with Evanescence style vocals.

METAL ANARCHY: Tell me a little about your new album:

KATIGBAK: The new album is called Victim and it’s an 8-track concept album. The story is about a girl who is raped and beaten by a group of men but was saved by a demon who gives her powers to get revenge. However, nothing ever comes for free as she would later find out.

In this album, we have gone with a bigger, heavier sound and darker themes. I think metal fans will be pretty happy about it.

METAL ANARCHY: What can people expect when they go to your live shows?

KATIGBAK: Our setlist is always dynamic. We arrange the songs so we take our audience on a journey from start to finish instead of staying at one level throughout. We like to start with something with a bit of atmosphere to get the mood going and then come in loud and heavy to let everyone know this is the start of a rock show. It then goes through different levels throughout the show.

METAL ANARCHY: Where do you see your band heading in 5 years?

KATIGBAK: We’re really just ticking things off a bucket list. We’re not looking for world domination or make it big. Ofcourse, some of the things in the bucket list require that we reach a certain status but it is really more about achieving the musical and creative goals rather than achieving the status.
