Metal Anarchy is starting a “new music showcase” in which I will introduce you to up and coming bands that readers of this site may find interesting. The first one features an exclusive Q&A with an alt/prog metal band from London called Maxdmyz.
METAL ANARCHY: Tell me a little about your band.
JAY (drummer): So we’re a five piece alt/prog metal band from London, England. It’s melodic heavy music incorporating elements of death, thrash and classic rock – and some other more industrial/dancey bits and pieces here and there.
METAL ANARCHY: Who are your main influences?
ROGER (guitar): Tough one this, as it’s just so many and varied and differs band member to band member – anywhere from fifties American jazz to nineties techno – and then to more predictable influences such as AC/DC and Pantera – although you don’t necessarily hear that directly in the music of course. I think though if you’re into Amon Amarth, Pearl Jam, Anthrax, Alice in Chains, Type O and Slipknot you’ll probably something in Maxdmyz’s back catalogue that’ll float your boat.
METAL ANARCHY: What is your latest release and why should readers of this site check it out?
A’ZEDD (bass): Our last was The Hate Plane from a couple of years ago – but next month we’re releasing an EP Alchemical Metal as a prelude to an album in the middle of next year. So I only joined this band a couple of years ago, so what I’m about to say has some kind of legitimacy to it I guess – one of the things that persuaded me to become part of the circus was the fact that more than any other music I can remember hearing Maxdmyz is a great synthesis of most of my favourite genres – I’d get bored as hell just churning out the same kind of song – all the time. Don’t get me wrong I left bands like Motörhead and The Ramones that do that – it’s just that it’s not my thing. This band paints from a wide palette on a broad canvass – I love it and hope you do too.
METAL ANARCHY: What can people expect when they go to your live shows?
VORTEX (keys): A really great sonic experience – and visually although we do a lot less in terms of lighting and the performance madness (chainsaws etc) on stage than we used to the band’s stage presence more than compensates for that – we don’t need the props. It’s a very direct experience and connection with the audience – we don’t like anything to get in the way of that – some bands put on a mask, an act – we don’t do that – it’s authentic in that sense and very real – oh, yeah, and it’s groovy and as heavy as fuck!
METAL ANARCHY: Where do you see your band heading in 5 years?
TWISTER (singer): Bigger, harder, stronger, longer… I hope we’ll still be writing great songs, playing tighter and better, and just growing as a band and as people. We’ve established a reputation for ourselves I believe – we’re committed, serious and very talented – but that’s often the easy stuff, and who knows what the future holds – let’s hope it’s a highway without any bends.
