Time for the next edition of Metal Anarchy’s “new music showcase,” the feature where I introduce you to bands that readers of this site may find interesting. This time I have an exclusive Q&A with Mick Michaels of Corners Of Sanctuary.
METAL ANARCHY: Tell me a little about your band:
MICHAELS: Corners Of Sanctuary formed in early 2011…now celebrating our 10 year anniversary in 2021. Our goal was to create music that, at the time, we weren’t hearing and that we wanted to hear and play…the kind of Metal we grew up listening to. Our music is a blending of our roots…that’s why we call it the “New Wave of Traditional American Heavy Metal.” We feel we have taken the best of what those early days of Metal were offering and we put a modern twist to it. It’s our way of paying homage to the players and the music that inspired us.
METAL ANARCHY: Who are your main influences?
MICHAELS: For me, bands like KISS, Judas Priest, Ratt, Savatage, Accept, Queensrÿche…the list can go on…all had such an impact on me growing up. Players like Ace Frehley, K.K. Downing, Criss Oliva, John Sykes and Jake E Lee also had a lot of influence on how I wanted to approach my guitar playing. But as time went on I came to realize that influence and inspiration can come from anywhere…’cause it’s everywhere. And as artists, we just need to be open to the possibilities…we need to be aware because you never know when it will hit you.
METAL ANARCHY: What is your latest release and why should readers of this site check it out?
MICHAELS: We just released a new EP titled “Blood and Steel: volume one” on RFL Records. It’s a bit darker for us given previous releases but it still has that Corners Of Sanctuary sound and style…just a bit grittier in some respects. I think it is a demonstration of how the band is progressing…it’s a natural thing for band’s to explore new avenues and approaches to songwriting…it keeps things interesting. Why should people listen to it? Well, if you dig that old school, Classic Heavy Metal sound then this is something to check out. It has a throwback feel to it but it’s completely modern edged…Corners of Sanctuary…the modern sound of Classic Heavy Metal!
METAL ANARCHY: What can people expect when they go to your live shows?
MICHAELS: Straight-forward, no nonsense Traditional Heavy Metal. It’s an old school show that lets the music do the talking for us. You’ll definitely have your head rockin’ and your foot stompin’. It’s all about the music.
METAL ANARCHY: Where do you see your band heading in 5 years?
MICHAELS: We definitely still plan on doing what we are doing now and that’s making music. We will be following up the “Blood and Steel: volume one” EP with two more instalments later this year as part of our 10 year anniversary celebration…and we’ve already started working on our next full length album, “Vengeance of the Fallen,” which we look to release sometime in 2022. Aside from our own Corners Of Sanctuary projects, we also get involved with other stuff too…we are currently working with the multi-artist initiative Hear ‘n Now on some new music that will be dropping in April. Plus some side projects like Starlight and a new doom groove thing we have going on…not to mention my blog The Cosmick View and podcast The Cosmick.
